Salt

Salar de Uyuni is one of Bolivia’s salt deserts. The salt flats are the largest in the world. The surreal flat expanse of ground covering 10,000km ² is the remains of lakes pushed up from sea level during the formation of the Andes mountain range and are covered with salt creating a 360° panoramic view of blinding whiteness. Hexagonal shapes are formed due to the freezing and thawing processes of water which creates a quilting effect. Photographing the salt crystals and unique patterns was fascinating. Fortunately, there had been some annual rainfall which created shallow lakes only a few centimetres deep on top of the salt, creating a mirror image reflective surface.
